Local DACA renewal clinic welcomes those seeking info and help

By JESSICA LOPEZ

On Saturday Sept. 30, 2017, the Coalition for Immigrant Justice of the Inland Empire and MEChA de RHS will be hosting a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival renewal clinic at Redlands High School. The renewal clinic will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the RHS Student Center and is open to any person who may benefit or is interested in more information.

There will be volunteers to help fill out the renewal forms and a lawyer will be present to answer any questions and give free consultations. The Coalition has received four grants to help pay for the renewal fee for DACA recipients of low income. Noemi Villagrana Barragan, Spanish teacher at RHS, helped organize the clinic and recommends that DACA recipients “bring passport pictures, employment authorization card, social security card, and a copy of their previous applications.”

On Tuesday Sept. 5, 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Justice Department is rescinding DACA. According to a press release by the Department of Homeland Security on June 12, 2015, DACA is an immigration policy that protects some individuals who came to America as minors from deportation and offers them a renewable, two-year deferred action from deportation and eligibility to work with a permit.

DACA was originally started by former President Barack Obama on June 12, 2015. According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website before Sept. 5, 2017, in order to have qualified for DACA a person would have had to be under 31 years old by the date of enactment and have arrived to the United States before their 16th  birthday. They would have had to have been living continuously in the U.S from June 15, 2007, until present day and present in the United States on June 12, 2015. They had to be studying, or had graduated from high school, or earned a certificate of GED. They could not have had a felony, a DUI, or three or more misdemeanors.

The DACA renewal clinic is available to anyone in the community, not just RHS students. RHS is located at  840 E Citrus Ave, Redlands, CA 92374.
