The Ambiguous Meaning Behind Family

By JASMYN GONZALEZ

Simply defining family is much more than a phrase or even a few sentences. Family has such different meanings for different people in the world that one simple definition just wouldn’t fit.

Sophomore Sasha Boyarski gave her insight on family by stating, “Family is a bond that you have with a bunch of people in your life. It doesn’t really matter if it’s your best friend or your parents and your brother. You have this really strong bond between them and that’s what makes them your family.” Going off of this statement, family can be considered either blood related members or just a friend who has been loyal for a very long time which has instilled a strong trust between the two.

Dawn Toth, a Chemistry teacher at REV also stated that, “Family is your support system; your brothers and sisters in Christ.” Several other students also elaborated on the idea that family is one’s support system and that they are always there for each other.

Dictionary.com defines family as “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not” however, family cannot simply be defined as this. Each person has their own opinion on what family is and what family means to them. This is what makes family such a strong and unique principle.
