Wildcat girls golf team off to bright start

By MAYA SANCHEZ

The Girl’s REV Golf Team is off to a great start this season. Having a little under double the players than they did last year, the girls is not only set for this season, but also for the seasons to come.

Coached by Sam Patalano, the team came into a solid second place last year and four of their girls made CBL. This season, with strong returners and a group of newcomers, the REV Golf team is looking at a bright season ahead. The season was made even brighter by starting off with a huge win.

Last year, the Yucaipa’s Girls Golf team had an undefeated season and easily snatched the first place title. However, the first match of this season put Redlands East Valley and Yucaipa to the forefront. It was a tight match, but Redlands East Valley pulled away with a win by one stroke. The scores 251 to 252 show how evenly matched these teams are and can be used to predict the competitiveness of the rest of the season.

Morgan Glaub, a senior at Redlands East Valley, is one of the three captains of the team this year. “I think [the team] is going to come in pretty strong this year. It’s looking good,” she remarked after the first match. She has right to this optimistic. She herself scored a 48, and Kat Mcintyre, a freshman, started off her high school golf career with a 54. Both are scores to be proud of.

“I was pretty surprised to play this well so early on in the year,” Victoria Chung, a junior and also one of the captains, stated. “But I know I am going to work harder and do better later on in the season.” She was ecstatic to talk about her expectations for the season. Last season Victoria barely missed the cutoff for making CIF and if her season continues in the same way it has started, she’ll be making CIF this year.

I, as another one of the captains, cannot wait to see what the season brings us. This year’s starting team is made up of returning members who all have plenty of playing experience. Even the newcomers are learning the ropes fast and are also getting playing time on the course.

The team is eager to continue on with their season, and are even more excited about the prospect of becoming CBL champs. While it is too early to declare anything, the Redlands East Valley Team has high hopes for the season.
