Suicide Squad Entertains

By CAROLINA SANCHEZ

“Suicide Squad” is based on the comic book series by the same name. The story follows a group of classic DC villains that have been kidnapped or blackmailed into doing the government’s controversial work and “if they get caught, we throw ’em under the bus.”
The group is lead by the menacing Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, and includes Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), and their on-the-ground leader, Rick Flag, who is played by Joel Kinnaman.

Together they, like in most hero movies, fight an witch (Cara Delevingne) who is trying to take over the world. The cliche plot is made unique because it is accompanied by music that ranges from Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody to Rick James’ Super Freak by.  From the beginning music plays a huge role. Each main character receives their own song that sets the mood for the character and in itself tells another story. Each main character is fully fleshed and heart-warming, but if they were not played by an A-list actor it was hard to get attached to them

A big advertising point for this movie was the Joker (Jared Leto). The traditionally crazed character was amplified for this adaptation and Jared Leto was excellent as him.  His famous laugh, on the other hand, may need some more work for the upcoming Batman and Suicide Squad movies. His counterpart, Batman (Ben Affleck), also makes a small appearance in the movie just to show that from now on all the Warner Brothers’ DC movies will exist in the same universe.

Although the movie is in the same universe as “Batman v Superman” and “The Man of Steel”, it does not have the same dark, depressing tones those movies have. To contrast them even further, Suicide Squad has a very diverse cast. In a world where representation is important, having a movie where characters look like the world around them is important.

If you are looking for a good time and are craving some good music, Suicide Squad is the movie for you.
