The Rotary Rising Star Program awards students in the Redlands Unified School District for conquering adversity and always giving their greatest effort in school work despite hardships. The purpose of the “Rising Star” program is to recognize high school students who display persistence, diligence, effort, and capability of overcoming obstacles in academic and personal lives. This program strives to acknowledge students who often go unnoticed for setting a positive example around campus and in their community.
Citrus Valley had two recipients for this prestigious award: Cecilia Hernandez and Dahajee Allan. Hernandez felt like she did something right in high school that was worth being noticed when she was awarded. Hernandez is thankful for her parents’ support and encouragement. Seeing their accomplishments has inspired her to achieve the same. Allan felt accomplished to achieve this award. Allan reflected on his past of not gaining many special things and how this award “made [his] heart feel warm.” Allan would like to thank his counselor, Trish Scott, for her constant motivation and valuable advice.
Redlands East Valley’s award recipient was Shynol McClain. McClain feels, “It represents my four years of hard work by me overdoing adversity. With my faith and hope I was able to overcome the adversity that could’ve took me down the wrong path. The award made me feel like these four years were worth the work and time.” When asked of his biggest inspiration, McClain responded, “My mother. She shows me how to be a stronger and better person every day.”
