Kesha Fights Against Sony

By ALLY GZESH
In Oct. 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit against her producer, Dr. Luke, for sexual assault, sexual harassment, emotional abuse, gender violence, battery, and violating California Business Practice Laws, that has occurred for over a decade.

When Kesha started her singing career in 2005, she was still unknown. She was 18, dropped out of High School the year prior, and enjoyed writing her own music. Dr. Luke signed Kesha into his record label, Kemosabe Records. Kesha then signed to the management company, DAS Communications inc. In 2006, she hardly interacted with Dr. Luke, and wrote music for an Australian pop group called, The Veronica’s. In 2008, she appeared in Katy Perry’s music video “I Kissed a Girl,” and sang backup for Britney Spears’ “Lace and Leather”.

This attracted the attention of Warner Bros. Studios, and contract negotiations began. However, the contract fell through due to her ties with Dr. Luke. In September of the same year, she terminated her contract with DAS, and continued to work with Dr. Luke.

She gained some exposure on Flo Rida’s single “Right Round” providing the female vocals of the song. However, she isn’t credited, because Kesha wanted to succeed on her own terms and not as part of someone else’s song.

For Kesha’s first album, Animal, she wrote 200 songs. Most, if not all, were rejected. Dr. Luke became Kesha’s executive producer for her songs. When the album came out, it debuted number one on the Billboard’s 200 list.

Kesha’s former managers filed a lawsuit demanding that Kesha pay them $14 million and an additional $12 million from Dr. Luke, saying that she extended the deadline, and only left DAS Communications inc. from pressures from Dr. Luke. Kesha filed a counter-suit, saying that they acted as an unlicensed talent agent, while procuring work for her. The case was settled in 2012.

In 2014, Kesha checked into rehab, which her mother alleges, was due to Dr. Luke’s constant insistence that Kesha was not skinny enough to succeed.

In Oct. of that year, Kesha filed the lawsuit against Dr. Luke. The judge had determined that while the dispute was going on, Kesha would not be allowed to release new music, and her current music cannot be aired. This means that Kesha is limited in how she can earn money.

In Feb. of 2016, the judge determined that Kesha shall not escape her contract with Sony, and can choose to work with other people. However, her contract with Dr. Luke hasn’t been terminated.

This ruling is what has infuriated many fans, and even gained the support of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Adele. Kesha supporters are rallying together, saying that Kesha shouldn’t have to keep working with Dr. Luke.

A video has also surfaced where Kesha has claimed under oath, that Dr. Luke hasn’t raped her, but Kesha said she was afraid of Dr. Luke attacking her again.

Her supporters are trying to find a way to unite and help Kesha out in any way they can.
