Don’t Find Yourself, Create Yourself

Perspectives from a Positively Stressed Senior

Finding yourself. What does that really mean? As a young child I was under the impression that finding myself would come when I was ending high school and making decisions that affected the path I would take in life. Throughout my whole 17 years of life, I have learned that this in fact, is not true. You go throughout life trying new things and everything you do influences the person you are today. You don’t find yourself, you create yourself.

Take a moment to think back on the things that have had the biggest impact on your life, whether good or bad. Most likely these events have changed the way you think about things or the way you go about your life. Through these events you begin to realize new things about yourself. Going through life your views and opinions change and you start to see the things around you in a different way.

Your toddler mindset was not the same as your teenage mindset is now. Think about it. When you were a toddler you might have felt like just because adults were saying no to everything they were out to get you, right? Oh wait, teenagers still think like that! You have created your own views based on your experiences. These experiences may be financial hardships, friendship problems, getting your first job, or even making your sports team at your school. Sure, you find out new things about yourself, but they come from what you have created.

People are constantly changing as they grow older and gain more knowledge. People tend to think that when a person becomes an adult, they don’t need to learn anything more. A person doesn’t just wake up one morning and uncover all the secrets to life and realize everything they have ever wanted to know. We are always learning new things no matter what our age is.

Creating yourself comes with experience and the happy times and the trials you go through.  I think people have the idea that life comes with a map and to get what you want, you have to follow the map and not stray from that path in anyway.  Life is not about following a path, it’s about making your own path.

We go through life trying to figure out that one thing that will help us find ourselves when in reality everything we do just adds to who we are.

We all have our own spirit and soul that is unique to us.

There is not only one thing that you can do to find yourself. Life is not about finding yourself, it’s about the experiences you have and the trials you face that make you who you are. An artist can spend many years trying to find that one perfect thing to paint, but then realize that the best thing to do is just to create the piece from their imagination.

Creating yourself can be one of the most exciting things in life. Everyday people find out new things about themselves to add to the person they already are. There is no change needed when you find another thing that interests you. The life you are living is solely yours, and it is up to you to create how you want to live.
