Live To Inspire: Ignore Society, Listen to YOU

By Layla Abbas

Society. Society is a single word that holds an immense amount of power. Society’s input can easily make or break a person’s entire life. The people around us and who we associate with are considered our society. Sadly, society is not as accepting as it should be and often has negative effects on people causing them to live their life in a different light. Despite societal judgement one should never lose sight of the most important voice; their own.

Despite what others may perceive of your actions you should never change your views in order to gain acceptance. At the end of the day if something is going to make you happy, do it and even though looking back is tempting, don’t. A  person who exemplifies embracing yourself and disregarding the judgment of others is Ellen Degeneres.

She is a famous comedian, talk show host, and author in today’s world. Ellen Degeneres is a  prime example of what can happen if you disregard the voice of others and listen to your personal views. Ellen DeGeneres knew early on that she indeed had a talent of making people laugh and she enjoyed doing so. After appearing on multiple late night talk shows and winning over a vast amount of crowds, she immediately made her mark on the world and became known as a comedic entertainer. She received an opportunity to have her own prime-time sitcom called Ellen. As it was reaching its peak and gaining positive attention, Ellen DeGeneres’ character became the first lead in sitcom history to openly acknowledge her homosexuality on air. This particular episode faced an extreme amount of backlash from others, causing a wide amount of sponsors for this show to withdraw advertisements because of this episode.

It did acquire positive attention such as winning an Emmy award for the “coming out” episode. Sadly, it was not enough support and Ellen was cancelled in 1998. One might feel discouraged after being shut down for something so personal, but Ellen Degeneres continued to support her own beliefs and accomplished remarkable things while doing so.

Ellen returned to television in 2003 with her own talk show, Ellen. With this incredible run she has been recognized with multiple awards commending Ellen for her strength, comedic power, and positive skills. At a time when being gay was not socially acceptable, Ellen continued to listen to her own beliefs and personal opinions and has accomplished incredible things along the way. Never be scared of what society has to say. Ellen, despite the voice of others around her, did not try to make those people happy. Her main goal was bringing happiness to her own life. Stray away from making society happy, and instead make yourself happy.

“When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.”  -Ellen DeGeneres
